5 Tips to a Healthier You in 2018

At Thai Street Kitchen we not only care about serving our customers a great, nutritious, all-natural Thai meal but also, we strive to educate, inspire, and encourage our customers to live healthy lives.

Choose Organic 1 – organic foods are produced without the use of harmful chemicals, are free of GMO’s (Genetically Modified Organisms), and the use of antibiotics are prohibited.

  • Organic foods are produced in a sustainable fashion thus, producing a healthier final product higher in antioxidants.
  • Organic farming practices are good for the environment, the farmer, and you.

In a Harvard School of Public Health news release, Grandjean said, “In conventional food, there are pesticide residues that remain in the food even after it’s washed. Organic foods are produced virtually without pesticides.” 2

Eat Fat – fat consumption from naturally occurring substances (plant and animal) in moderation is key to maintaining optimal health.

Check out the video below from Dr. Hyman. Unlock the myths and misconceptions of consuming fat.

  • Learn how consuming the right fats can actually make you leaner, healthier, and more vibrant.

Stay Hydrated- Did you know? “Your body contains about 11 gallons of water: Your blood is 85 percent water; your muscles 80 percent; your brain 75 percent and your bones are 25 percent water, which illustrates the importance water plays in your health.”3

  • There is no doubt drinking pure, clean water is essential to your over all health.
  • Headaches, fatigue, and even hunger can all be signs you may need more water.

Exercise – In The Grain Brain Whole Life Plan Dr. David Perlmutter identifies a basic exercise program you can follow to help build a better body.

Good Fats Versus Bad Fats: Is There Such a Thing as Good Fat?

By | Healthy Living | No Comments

Yes, there is such a thing as good fat. Join Thai Street Kitchen today as we unlock the mystery of good fats versus bad fats.

For years media, researchers, and health advocates were lobbying for “low fat diets”.  But, after a bit of research and experience what was discovered was cutting back on healthy fats did not in fact make people healthier.

You maybe thinking, “but, I thought fat was bad for me.” Well, the answer to that is “yes” and “no”. It is true; some fats are not good for you. But, what you may be surprised to learn is that “good fats” provide a surprisingly great amount of energy to your body. Among some of its many other important rolls, fat is needed to help build cell membranes, absorb nutrients, aid in muscle movement, and help in the clotting of blood.

What Makes One Fat Different From Another Fat?

All fats have a similar chemical structure. They consist of a chain of carbon atoms bonded to a hydrogen atom.

What makes one chain different from another? It is the length and structural make up of the chain.

Lets Look at Bad Fats

Trans fat is among the worst fat consumed today. It is a by-product of a process called hydrogenation. This process converts healthy oils into solids thus, preventing rancidity. This process of heating a vegetable oil and adding a heavy-metal catalyst to the carbon chain creates the substance on manufacturer food labels we know today as “partially hydrogenated oil”.

Eating foods high in trans fats from fast food, commercially made sweets, and pastries has been found to increase LDL cholesterol  (bad cholesterol) in the bloodstream. Trans fats have also been linked to an increase in inflammatory response within the body.

And, as we know inflammation has been linked to many health risks including: diabetes, stroke, heart disease, cancer, and many other chronic diseases.

“For every 2% of calories from trans fat consumed daily, the risk of heart disease rises 23%.” ~ Harvard University

Therefore, there is no “safe” amount of trans fat consumption. These man-made artificially altered fats are bad news and should be avoided at all cost.

The Low Down On Fat: And, Why You Need It

Saturated Fat

Saturated fat for quite some time got a bad wrap due to its chemically altered counterpart “trans fat”.  A diet high in saturated fat can certainly drive up your LDL cholesterol if consumed in great quantity. However, saturated fat consumed in moderation in naturally occurring animal and plant sources has been found to be a great source of naturally occurring omega-3’s.

Omega-3’s are an essential part of brain health and, with our ever increasing omega-6 (vegetable oils) consumption the recommended 1:1 ratio can be difficult to achieve without careful diet evaluation.

Why Fat Consumption in Moderation Is Key

As you can see not all fat is created equal. There certainly is a lot of mixed information out there about what constitutes a “good fat” versus what is a “bad fat”.  And, by no means are all fats created equal. However, as you can see not all fat is bad.

Fat consumption from naturally occurring substances (plant and animal) in moderation is key to maintaining optimal health.

Some of Our Thai Street Kitchen Favorites

Coconut oil is among one of our Thai Street Kitchen favorites. Its medium-chain fatty acid make up make for easy digestion. It is a naturally occurring saturated fat. And, as we learned above naturally occurring saturated fats are a great source of naturally occurring omega-3’s.

Coconut oil has been found to have an anti-inflammatory effect. Additionally, it has been found to increase good cholesterol and promote over all heart health.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) is certainly among another one of our top favorites. EVOO has been found to have a high amount of antioxidants thus protecting our body’s cells from damage. It has also been found to improve memory function, aid in heart health, and have anti-inflammatory properties.

At Thai Street Kitchen we use only the best and highest quality ingredients! We have fused the best of Michigan with the best of Thailand and, made your health our priority.

Benefits of Eating Organic – Is Eating Organic Food Really Better for You?

By | Organic Food | No Comments

The organic food industry is a growing $35 billion dollar industry and accounts for over 4% of the total U.S. food sales.  According to the Nutrition Business Journal

So, we at Thai Street Kitchen ask you the consumer; “is eating organic versus conventional food really better for you?”

Well, the answer is likely that of a mixed bag. At this present time there is little scientific research being conducted on the true benefits of solely eating an organic versus conventional food diet.

The lack of scientific research is a funding issue more than anything. A bulk of the funding for such conducted scientific research is provided by the government food industry. And, the FDA /USDA repeatedly has made mention that non-organic food is as healthy as its alternative organic counterparts.

So, why research?

Is Eating Organic Food Really Better for You?

We at Thai Street Kitchen will let you decide for yourself.

Despite the lack of research it has been found that; “consumers prefer organically produced food because of their concerns regarding health, the environment, and animal welfare, and the show a willingness to pay the price premiums established in the marketplace.” According to a recent USDA Economic Research Survey

Consumers, manufacturers, and organic farmers strongly believe that consuming organic food has the following benefits.

Benefits of Eat Organic Verse Conventional

Organic produce contains fewer pesticides – herbicides, petroleum based fertilizers, sewer sludge, fungicides, and potent insecticides are widely used in conventional agriculture practices. As a result of conventional practices such residues have been found to remain on the foods consumed and purchased.

Organic food has been found to be fresher – organic foods are typically produced by smaller nearby farms (but, not always) and lack many of the added preservatives that make foods last longer.

Organic farming is better for the environment – organic farming practices have been found to increase soil fertility, use less energy, and conserve water. Some environmentally friendly practices include the use of rain barrel and/or aquaponic gardening systems, mulch gardening, and hand weeding.

Organic livestock are raised humanely without the use of antibiotics, growth hormones, or fed animal-by products – organically raised animals are typically given room to roam freely in the outdoors. The use of antibiotics’ in livestock has been found to increase antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria in both humans (via consumption) and animals.

Organic meat and milk products prove to be richer in some nutrients – research has shown that organic milk is naturally higher in omega 3-fatty acids, has more antioxidants, and more vitamins than regular milk.

It may also surprise you to find out that many conventional modern day dairies use different chemicals to aid in milk production. These include chemicals and fertilizers for increased production of fodder feed. The use of added hormones and antibiotics have also been used to increase milk production.

Organic food is GMO-Free – genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are genetically engineered foods and or plants whose DNA has been altered in such a way that it is not naturally occurring in nature. It has also been proven that most genetically engineered foods are increasingly becoming resistant to many of the once commonly used insecticides and fertilizers.

Thus, our once conventionally grown foods are increasingly becoming heavily chemically laden residue experiments.

So, is conventional or organic food better for you? You decide!

Our TSK promise to you – we at Thai Street Kitchen use only all-natural antibiotic free and cage-free chicken, beef with no added hormones or antibiotics, organic non-GMO tofu, and the highest quality ingredients from local purveyors. We have fused the best of Michigan with the best of Thailand.

And you are in for a Real Health Treat.

4 Benefits of Drinking Tea Daily and Why Organic Whole Leaf Tea Matters

By | Tea | No Comments

Have you had a chance to dine in and try one of our specialty organic teas?

If not, stop in TODAY – you don’t know what you’re missing!

We use only USDA certified organic whole leaf teas, served in an 18oz infuser, so you can enjoy the highest quality with more flavor, aroma, antioxidants, and polyphenols.

Why Certified Organic Whole Leaf Tea?

The answer is rather quite simple – we at Thai Street Kitchen care about you and our environment.

It has been proven that synthetic pesticides and chemicals used in conventional growing methods are being transferred to our groundwater, streams, rivers, and lakes daily. Organic teas are free of synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides. Organically grown teas sustain the health of the soil, ecosystem, and the people who consume them through natural growing practices.

Drinking our tea you can rest assured the small farms are being supported, workers are being treated fairly, the environment and its consumers are not unnecessarily being exposed to the harmful chemicals used in conventional production practices.

What is Tea?

Tea is the process of drying herbal leaves and infusing them in water. Most teas on the market today are herbal infusions made up of dried flowers, stems, roots, and leaves.

4 Main Types: white, black, green, and oolong. The difference in these teas is how they are harvested and/or dried. The darker the tea the more processing it has undergone thus, stripping it of some of the beneficial nutrients.

4 Benefits of Drinking Tea Daily: There are many healing health benefits to drinking tea. Today, we are sharing just a few of them….

  • Increase immune system health via antioxidants – research has shown that people who drink green tea on a regular basis are less likely to fall ill due to the common bacterial and viral infections. The Catechins present in green tea help ward off bacteria and virus preventing them from attaching to important cell wall thus, normally resulting in an illness.
  • Antidepressant and Fatigue Fighter – tea is a great energizer. The alkaloids, tannin, and caffeine are a very quick efficient natural stimulant. It can almost instantly eliminate fatigue and boost one’s mood.  It has been thought that the slow sipping process or the L-Theanine alone can increase one’s overall brain alertness.
  • Naturally Detoxifying – give your body an added boost by adding some lemon. Tea has been found to be one of the best cures for an undesirable hangover or late night snack food binge. Help your body getting things moving and eliminate those unwanted toxins from your system.
  • Gums and Teeth – when tea is consumed without sugar it has been found to have a strong astringent property. The tannin in tea is an alkaloid and helps neutralize the access acids that maybe present on one’s teeth/gums.

Tannin has also been found to not only help strengthen gums but has also been found to strengthen hair roots when applied externally.
